How To Downsell The Right Way

Your offer caught the prospects’ attention. They took your front end offer. So you bring them to your upsell page with a better product.


They are interested. They read the whole sales copy. But the moment you reveal the price for your upsell offer, their buying intentions vanish completely.


So you present them with a downsell.


Effective downsell raise the bottom line of your sales. But do you know how to downsell effectively?


Here is the #1 rule of crafting downsell:

Do not offer a discount for the same offer you put up on the upsell page.

Although some of your clients may take up your discounted downsell offer, doing this is likely to damage your business in the long run.


This is because when you offer a discount for the initial offer, you train people to never pay the full price for your products. So in future, they will always reject your original offer first, knowing that they can get another discount for sure.


It also hurt your credibility to people who are ready to pay. I have gone through a sales funnel like that once. I was interested but I want to check out what else is in store. Thus, I click on the “No, thank you” button. To my surprise, it brings me to another page with the same offer but a lower price.


Guess what happened next?


I keep clicking the “no, thank you” button just to find out if I can get it at an even lower price. In the end, I didn’t even purchase the product that I wanted to purchase initially.

Offering 2 different pricing for the same offer = dishonesty.

You will end up offending those people who paid the full price as they will feel cheated and regretful for purchasing your offer right away.


It doesn't make sense that only less enthusiastic buyers are qualified to get better discounts. Don't you agree?


So next time when you are planning the flow of your funnel, make sure you put more thoughts into every step (the front end, upsell, downsell, continuity program)
